In care work the first rule comes before any prompt: patient information never goes into a general AI tool. No names, room numbers, dates of birth, or any detail that could point to a person. Follow your facility's policy on AI. Inside that line, AI is a strong study partner and a safe place to practice the conversations that matter.
You leave with
A study routine built on your own textbook, practice reporting with made-up cases, and plainer explanations you check yourself.
Before you start: never put these into an AI tool
- Patient names, room numbers, dates of birth, diagnoses tied to a person, or photos.
- A real shift with the name taken out. The date, the unit and what happened can still point to a person. Make the whole case up, or do not use the tool.
- Anything your facility's policy says stays out of AI tools.
- Passwords, account numbers, or anything that unlocks something.
- Anything your employer says stays inside the company.
Safety: AI never makes a clinical decision. Your instructor, your charge nurse and your facility's protocols decide what is clinically right, and anything given to patients goes through your facility's approval.
How to use the prompts
- Fill in the blanks under a prompt, then tap Copy prompt.
- Open Claude (opens in a new tab), or the AI tool your employer approves, and paste it into the message box.
- Send it, read the answer, and check it before you use it. Then come back here for the next step.
Words in this lesson
- SBAR:
- Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation: a common order for reporting a patient's condition.
- CNA:
- Certified Nursing Assistant.
Step 1 of 4Quick win
Study from your own textbook
Paste a short section of your textbook or class notes, and quiz yourself on that text only.
Prompt to copy
I am a [your role, for example CNA student / nursing student] studying for [exam]. Below is a section from my textbook or class notes. Explain it simply, then quiz me with five questions on this text only, one at a time. After each answer, quote the part of the text that shows the right answer. If the text does not cover it, say so. [the textbook section]
Fill in the blanks above, or replace each [bracket] yourself after pasting.
Step 2 of 4
Practice reporting with SBAR
This practices how you report, not clinical judgment. The case is made up, so no real patient is involved. Report the way your role does: aides usually report to the nurse, nurses to the provider.
Prompt to copy
I am a [your role]. Make up a simple patient situation, clearly fictional, that someone in my role would need to report. Let me practice reporting it using SBAR. Then give feedback only on my communication: was it clear, in order and complete? Do not judge clinical decisions; I will check those with my instructor.
Fill in the blanks above, or replace each [bracket] yourself after pasting.
Step 3 of 4
Say it more plainly
Write your own general explanation, with no patient details, and ask for plainer words. Then compare the two versions yourself, line by line. The AI's list of changes helps you check, but it is not proof.
Prompt to copy
Rewrite my explanation in plain language a worried family member would understand. Do not add or change any information. Then list every place where you changed the wording, so I can compare. [your explanation, no patient details]
Fill in the blanks above, or replace each [bracket] yourself after pasting.
Worked example: spot the problem
Everything here is made up, for practice.
Their explanation
Visiting hours are 9 to 8. Two visitors at a time. Children under 12 must be with an adult.
What the AI wrote
You can visit between 9 am and 8 pm. Up to two people can visit at a time, and children under 12 need to come with an adult. Family can also stay overnight in private rooms.
What did the AI add? Show the answerHide the answer
The problem: The overnight stay was never in their explanation. A family could show up expecting something the unit does not offer.
Fixed, using only the notes
You can visit between 9 am and 8 pm. Up to two people can visit at a time. Children under 12 need to come with an adult.
Step 4 of 4
Practice the hard conversation
Upset family, a long wait, a question you are not allowed to answer. Practice the words before you need them. If the question is about a diagnosis or a change in condition, practice only the words your facility says your role can use.
Prompt to copy
Act as a family member who is upset because [situation, made up, no real details]. Stay in character and push back the way a real person would. After five exchanges, tell me what calmed you down and what made it worse.
Fill in the blanks above, or replace each [bracket] yourself after pasting.
Check before you use it
- Nothing you typed could identify a real patient.
- Every clinical fact matches your textbook or facility protocol.
- You compared the plain version with yours, line by line.
On your resume, only if you actually did this at work
Studied for [the exam] using AI tools, [what you passed and when].
Never describe patient care you did not do. Leave AI use off your resume if your facility does not allow it.
