Prepare for the interview with a practice partner

The best use of AI in a job search is practice. Paste the posting, get practice questions, answer them out loud, and get honest feedback. One rule: only your real experience. Experience counts from work, school, caregiving or volunteering. An answer built on something you did not do falls apart at the first follow-up question.

You leave with

Practice questions tied to the posting, practiced answers, and your own questions about pay, hours and the work.

Before you start: never put these into an AI tool

  • Your references' private contact details.
  • Passwords, account numbers, or anything that unlocks something.
  • Anything your employer says stays inside the company.

How to use the prompts

  1. Fill in the blanks under a prompt, then tap Copy prompt.
  2. Open Claude (opens in a new tab), or the AI tool your employer approves, and paste it into the message box.
  3. Send it, read the answer, and check it before you use it. Then come back here for the next step.

Words in this lesson

STAR:
Situation, Task, Action, Result: a simple order for answering "tell me about a time" questions.
  1. Step 1 of 3Quick win

Get practice questions from the posting

These are practice guesses based on the posting, not the employer's real questions.

    Prompt to copy

Here is a job posting. Give me three practice interview questions based on what it asks for. For each, quote the line of the posting it comes from. [job posting]

Fill in the blanks above, or replace each [bracket] yourself after pasting.

  2. Step 2 of 3

Answer out loud, then get feedback

Say your answer out loud first, then type what you said. Ask for feedback on the order, not for new content.

    Prompt to copy

Here is a practice question and my answer. Tell me whether I gave the situation, my action and the result, and what to cut. Use only what I said. Never suggest adding things I did not say I did. Question: [question] My answer: [what you said]

    Worked example: spot the problem

Everything here is made up, for practice.

    Their answer notes

Customer yelling about a return. I listened, got my manager who could approve it. She left calm.

    What the AI wrote

A customer was upset about a return. I listened calmly, offered her store credit, and she left happy and later posted a great review.

What did the AI add? Show the answer

The problem: The store credit and the review never happened. An interviewer who asks "what did the review say?" ends the interview.

    Fixed, using only the notes

A customer was upset about a return and was yelling (situation). I needed to help her with the return (task). I listened, and brought in my manager, who could approve it (action). She left calm (result).

  3. Step 3 of 3

    Have your own questions ready

Asking about pay, guaranteed hours and schedule is normal. You need to know if the job works for your life.

    Prompt to copy

Based on this posting, give me questions I could ask the interviewer about the work itself, training, schedule, guaranteed hours, overtime, physical requirements and pay range. I will pick the ones that matter to me. [job posting]

Check before you use it

  • Every answer is about something you really did.
  • You can say each answer out loud in under two minutes.
  • If anyone asks you for money, a gift card, or an interview over a private chat app before you have met the employer, stop. That is a common job scam.
